Treatment Services

Marestail is tricky to control and harder to destroy, but we are confident in our ability to substantially reduce it with repeated treatments.

Once we have correctly identified the weed in your garden, we will work out a long-term removal plan based on how much has taken root in your property. The first year of treatment will consist of 3 treatments to make the largest possible dent in the shortest span of time.

These initial treatments will do the majority of the work. Depending on the extent of the marestail problem, you will only need 1 or 2 treatments over the following 5 years.

As well as removing the marestail, we will also treat the pH of the surrounding soil in order to help new plant growth, which was otherwise suppressed due to competition with the marestail.

Frequently Asked Questions about our services

What do you look for?

Marestail has a very varied life cycle, and can take a number of forms depending on the point in the year.

  • Marestail begins to stir in the springtime. We will be on the look out for small brown stems, ending with green cone-like spores. These can be between 20 to 50 centimetres in height.
  • These stems explode in growth during the summertime. Fir tree-like shoots emerge from the stems, which can grow up to 5 feet in height.
  • Being a perennial weed, marestail withers and dies off when autumn rolls around and remains underground during the winter. However, it always springs back from its deep roots when spring returns.

Do you take any steps to prevent further outbreaks?

Marestail thrives in acidic soil conditions. We are therefore able to treat the pH of the soil in the area surrounding the infestation, which has the dual effects of warding away further growth and encouraging less hardy plants to grow.

Is it possible for you to destroy marestail altogether?

Between its deep root system, adapted herbicide resistance and rapid spore production, outright marestail removal can be tricky.

While we cannot promise that we will be able to eradicate this weed from your garden, we are able to monitor, manage and eventually stunt its growth.
